Over the last four decades, the 4Runner has become instantly recognized especially because of it's reputation as an off road icon in North America. The all new- 2025 Toyota 4Runner stays faithful to its roots as a highly capable, dynamic and robust off-roader, promising to open doors to new adventures. This newest generation of 4Runner debuts with a striking design, enhanced technology, upscale materials, more options and improved safety features, setting a new standard for versatility and luxury in off-roading.

"The all-new 4Runner continues Toyota's legacy of building legendary trucks while introducing a cool new look and incredible features that prepare this versatile and authentic body-on-frame SUV for the future." said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. "The new 4Runner is designed to impress with new style and comfort, state of the art safety and off-road technology ensuring this is a go-anywhere, do-anything truck- especially when coupled with the impressive torque of the available i-Force MAX powertrain."

Robust Framework

The 4Runner has been completely redesigned from the ground up, utilizing Toyota's robust TNGA-F global truck platform, which it shares with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. This platform features a high-strength boxed steel-ladder frame and is equipped with a multi-link coil rear suspension and double wishbone front suspension.

The introduction of the TNGA-F platform not only enhances durability but also significantly improves the vehicle's ride quality and handling on the road. Even passengers in the optional third row will notice the comfort provided by this new platform. With a strengthened frame and the potent i-FORCE MAX powertrain, the 4Runner now boasts a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds.

Evolving the Legacy

"Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation," says Calty President, Kevin Hunter. "Inspired by Baja desert racing the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runners's go anywhere purpose."

Led by the Michigan-based CALTY design team spearheaded the design of this all-new 4Runner. Designers pulled inspiration from the past while also focusing on the future. The all-new 4Runner was designed alongside the Tacoma and shares a family resemblance but is unique in its own way. Both share inspiration from the desert racing scene and have a rugged-with-a-purpose appearance. in a not the the first and second generation of 4Runners, designers were able to bring back the legacy "wrap over" quarter glass, and the beloved roll-0donw rear window continues as a staple of its design. The design team devoted considerable effort to perfecting the interior, focusing on easy operation and a functional interface that combines modern elegance with authentic ruggedness. Features like the second-row tumble seats enhance the 4Runners interior flexibility and maximize cargo space.

i-FORCE Power MAX

This new generation of 4Runner offers tow powerful and efficient turbocharged 2.4 litre four-cylinder powertrains including the i-FORCE engine putting out 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque that is paired to an eight-speed automatic Transmission. The SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited trims come standard with the i-FORCE engine powertrain.

4Runner's i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road and comes standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum models. This powertrains combines the 2.4 litre turbocharged engine with a 48-hp electric motor connected to a eight-speed transmission, using a 1.87kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of up to 326 horsepower and 465lb.-ft. of torque, the most powerful powertrain ever offered in a 4Runner.

Adventure Equipped

The 4Runner is known for it's rugged capability and this latest iteration builds on its off-road legacy with enhanced abilities and features. A standout addition is the Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism, which increases suspension articulation at the push of a button, helping maintain tire contact on uneven terrain. The 4Runner now also offers up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, setting a new standard in off-road performance.

In Canada, the 4Runner is available with either part-time 4WD or fulltime 4WD, both paired with and electronic two-speed transfer case, featuring high and low range settings, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and a limited slip differential (Auto LSD). Electronic rear differentials come standard on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trim levels. The Limited trim offers an optional full-time-four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential for i-FORCE MAX models. while the Platinum trims include this as a standard feature.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now works in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, offering customizable settings to manage wheels spin across various surfaces like mud, dirt, and sand. The newly refined CRAWL Control function acts as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing drivers to focus on steering. This feature is especially useful in conditions where traction is severely compromised, allowing the electronically activated locking rear differential to evenly distribute power to the rear wheels. Additionally, Downhill Assist Control is available to help manage vehicle speed during steep descents, enhancing control and safety.

A 4Runner for Everyone

4Runner expands its trim levels provide customers with more choices than ever before. In Canada, seven trim levels will be available from the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, to the TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter trim level has been created to create a simple solution for some Overlanding customers. The 4Runners capability and durability have made it a fan favourite in the Overlanding scene and now adventure seekers have a turnkey solution with a manufacturer-developed overland rig straight from the factory.

For example the Trailhunter will feature ARB's Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs, along with a uniquely co-designed ARB Roof Rack. The OME shocks along with the 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires boost up Trailhunter an additional tow inches in the front and one and a half in the rear. A standard low-profile high-mount air intake sources cleaner air for the i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Trailhunter adds protection that include rock rails and high strength steel skid plates for serious off-the-grid- adventure capabilities. The Trailhunter is also equipped with a heritage grill with bronze "TOYOTA" lettering and an integrated 20-inch LED light bar that is complemented by colour selectable RIGID LED fog lamps. A seriously powerful 2400W AC inverter provides juice to tow locations in the cabin and the rear cargo area. You can customize your Trailhunter further with more Toyota accessories and utilize three easy to reach auxiliary switches that are pre-wired throughout the vehicle.

For 2025 the 4Runner also gets the Platinum treatment offering customers a high-end, luxury experience with all the capability you expect from a 4Runner. The Platinum trim is above the Limited trim adding unique black exterior styling elements, heated second-row seats, a standard tow tech package, head-up display and automatic rain sensing wipers.

Latest Tech

This generation of 4Runner has received some major technology upgrades. We have upgraded to a standard 8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen displays, which was designed by Toyota's Connected Technologies team. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, and pairs well with the available Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output. A USB-C data and charging port is integrated on the right side of the multimedia touchscreen, and dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row and available for the rear passengers. A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard on lower trim levels and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on higher trim levels.

The Smart Key System with push-button start is standard on all trim levels. With an active Remote connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key on select trim levels connects with compatible smartphones to allow vehicle entry and vehicle starting (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to give more control over your vehicle access rather than giving someone the physical key.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0

All 2025 Toyota 4Runner models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This is our most recent updated collection of active safety and convenience systems. This suite includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

The 2025 4Runner will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan and will arrive in Canada in the Fall of 2024.
